The article mentions that “… as of yet been little headway in signing up private truck stops or other parking facilities to the project.”. Iowa appears to be a positive exception to this.
Iowa DOT’s program has been very successful in negotiating with private truck stops and parking facilities. As of the date of the article, nearly half (46%) of the 41 sites IDOT deployed are private parking areas- 15 privately owned truck stops, one privately owned restaurant and one privately owned casino. The list of private sites even includes a system deployment at the largest truck stop in the world (I-80 exit 284 near Walcott, IA). Iowa’s system accounts for nearly a third of all the 127 parking sites that are feeding data into the overall system.
Iowa’s strategy and methods for negotiating with private site owners and deploying these systems may be a case study for future private site deployment models.
